Marywood Aquatics Center
Scranton, PA
Completed in 2011 at a cost of $5,600,000, the Marywood University Aquatics Center expands the existing Athletic and Wellness Center by approximately 18,000 SF. The centerpiece of the project, the high-volume natatorium, provides a light and airy space for aquatic training and competition. The raised viewing area has retractable bleachers which allow the space multi-purpose capabilities. Beyond are mechanical and storage areas to support the space while a pool safety office suite and expanded men’s and women’s locker & team rooms lie to the west. New entry vestibules at both sides provide identity and access to the aquatic center for community use.
The exposed-steel framed natatorium features a distinctive single-sloped, sky-lit roof supported by a series of inverted bowstring trusses. The enclosing walls are painted CMU and aluminum-framed glazing and the ceiling soars to 40’ above the pool deck.
Positioned at right angles to the roof structure, the pool itself is an eight-lane by 25-yard competition pool with a roll-out gutter system. Its depth spans 4’ to 13 ½’ and it has a plaster aggregate finish with tile banding. Equipment includes two one-meter diving boards, one three-meter diving board, and a timing system.
The exterior cladding of glass, brick, and limestone tie to the original construction and other buildings of the Marywood University campus. The fully glazed corner walls of the natatorium feature horizontally banded fenestration. The projecting two story, limestone clad west entry recalls and balances the main entrance of the complex to the south.
