Marywood University
Learning Commons
Scranton, PA
The Learning Commons is a 75,000 SF state-of-the-art library and teaching facility at the heart of Marywood University’s scenic, wooded campus. Its library collection is housed in a central automatic retrieval vault, freeing adjacent floor space for open reading and group study spaces. Extensive use of glass opens the interior to the park-like campus and provides transparency of function from the exterior. Though the building dominates the grassy knoll in front, the glass facade ushers the outside in, allowing for the integration of structure to surrounding.
Completed in 2015, the building houses study areas, staff offices, work areas, a café, conference rooms, group study rooms, seminar rooms, reading areas, media production and recording rooms, instruction rooms, roof terraces, and a green roof over 3 floors plus a basement and sub-basement.
