Lackawanna College

Environmental Education Center (LEEC)
Covington Township, PA

hemmler + camayd architects worked with Lackawanna College to create an Environmental Institute (LCEI) for the College. The design goal of the LCEI is to create a setting that enables the fulfillment of its educational mission focused on the stewardship of the natural environment and the promotion of sustainable technologies.  Aside from the programs, such as lectures, exhibits, seminars, etc, the building itself will be used as a teaching tool.

The intention was for the site to retain is intrinsic rural character.  Stone walls were used to define the property. The surrounding mature, deciduous woods that define the open field remained in place. Solar powered lighting units were used. The use of natural materials such as flag stone, gravel, and river stone at the entryway and on paths provides a setting consistent with the Environmental Institute’s mission and respect for all things natural. Because the Institute was seeking LEED Certification, the careful selection of materials was imperative, and a worthy effort as the facility was awarded LEED Gold.

The original house remained as a relic of early small Pennsylvania farming homestead. In its reconstruction, the house retains its proportions, features and appearance.  In spite of its modest presence, the house remains the focal point of the entire composition.  Its modesty is celebrated by careful design surrounding additions.
