Mansfield University
Allen Hall
Mansfield, PA
This new arts center at Mansfield University houses the school’s graphic arts and communication arts programs. The 29,000 GSF facility contains art studios for painting, sculpture, computer graphics, and photography, and the Communications department is served by a television studio, three instructional classrooms, and editing rooms. Rounding out the building’s program are a large lecture hall that seats 150, a student lounge that doubles as a gallery, and 21 faculty offices.
The building sits on a residual campus site; a partial basement maximizes available space while contending with the site’s steep slope. Materials typical of Mansfield’s other buildings, such as brick masonry, were used in combination with a metal panel skin. A curtain wall at the north-facing façade ensures optimal light conditions for the art studios.
