hc architects worked with the University of Scranton to create a new 90,000sf+ Workforce Development Building, located on the edge of campus proper, connecting to the downtown campus at the urban edge.

The program of the building services both students and University community, as well as the community at large. This public facing building houses an Innovation Center, to be used by both students and for workforce development by the community. The building also houses Cybersecurity and Criminal Justice, Psychology, Education, and other general classroom spaces. Additionally, the student health services and student health and wellness enrichment will be relocated to the new building.

The 5-story building welcomes all with a double-story atrium space that is constructed solely out of heavy timber and wood. The building has achieved LEED Silver rating, and is equipped with a multitude of various sustainable design elements, inclusive of photovoltaic solar panels, high performance glass, and low-water-usage fixtures. Additionally, the building serves as a student gathering hub with student breakout spaces and general student gathering areas, as well as both indoor and outdoor interfaith worship spaces.

The structure is clad in a combination of regional West Mountain Stone, various glazing systems, and brick to tie the aesthetics of adjacent masonry buildings together. The building has two rooftop terraces that will be used by students and faculty for social and academic purposes.

This project received federal funding that required Build America Buy America bidding requirements.
